Untouchable

Call it what you want it, but the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup was marvelous. On this day, one year ago, the United States women’s national soccer team (USWNT) captured their second straight World Cup, making them legends. Everyone knows about the Bulls in the 90’s and the Packers in the 60’s. However, what the USWNT has been able to do this last decade should have them right up there with the greatest dynasties that the sports world has ever seen.

Just how good are these girls? The USWNT scored 26 goals in only seven games at the 2019 World Cup. They only gave up three goals during their time in France, despite playing over 600 minutes. In their opener, they put 13 past Thailand. Leaving the poor Thai national team in tears.

The fact is, at this time there is nobody better than the USWNT. In both 2015 and 2019, the US dominated the field at each world cup. Veteran players leave, but that proves to be no issue. Abby Wambach was great, but they moved on without her. Megan Rapinoe is aging but that doesn’t stop her, and the US will have replacements for her when she decides that her time is up. The USWNT are in such a good spot with the state of their program at the moment. It should leave the rest of the world scared.

Perhaps the best thing about this current dynasty is how fun the USWNT are to watch. They’re always on the same page. Megan Rapinoe is eccentric, flashy, and usually is the best one on the field. Alex Morgan scores, and scores, and scores. Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and Carli Lloyd will forever be remembered as tournament heroes. It really is a special time.

Megan Rapinoe spoke about what the World Cup win meant to her. "I think we knew that this win, if we were able to win, was gonna be bigger than soccer but that moment just solidified everything. This World Cup win is so much more than what was on the field. It seems like one of those sort of iconic turning points in history, to be honest. That kind of cemented that and kicked off that feeling of 'Wow this is so much bigger than just these people coming here to watch this game.'"

Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, and Mallory Pugh provide excitement for the future. They are all 26 or younger which may be ever more exciting, considering they can get even better. This team gives this country a certain swagger when they play. Maybe it’s just me missing live sports, but the USWNT watch parties are unique and unite us as one. Everyone wants an Alex Morgan jersey (of course my friends and I all have one) and everyone knows her infamous “tea sipping” celebration against England. What’s the word to describe this team? Badass. Or something like that.

One year ago, when they were spraying champagne in Lyon, France it was well deserved. The USWNT are currently ranked number one in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking. Year in and year out they crush the competition. They show why they’re back to back World Cup champions. So, whenever you think of sports dynasties, you should think of the USWNT. They’re the best team in the world and the past decade it hasn’t been close. They’re untouchable.
